Rules of petanque:

Where can you play? Wherever you find a patch of sandy ground: garden, path, beach, park, wood, public square, dedicated area for playing bowls, etc.

Equipment: 1 jack, known as a "cochonnet"
1 set of bowls

How many players?
1 a-side => 3 bowls per player
2 a-side => 3 bowls per player
3 a-side => 2 bowls per player

Aim of the game: To place your bowls closer to the jack that those of your opponent

Rules:
There is a toss up to decide which team opens play. Any player in this team chooses the starting point and traces a circle 35-50 cm in diameter on the ground.
A player's feet when playing must not leave the circle before the bowl touches the ground.
This player then throws the jack to a distance of between 6 and 10 metres. The jack must be at least 1 metre from any obstacle (wall, tree, etc.) .
The player then throws his first bowl, trying to place it as close as possible to the jack.
A player from the second team then steps into the circle and tries to place his bowl closer to the jack than the previous bowl, either by throwing or rolling it. The leading bowl is the one closest to the jack.
If the player is successful: a player from the first team plays again.
If he is unsuccessful, the players in his team play their bowls until they have no more bowls left to play.
When a team has no more bowls, the other team plays all of its bowls. When both teams have no more bowls, the points are counted up. The points of the winning team are determined by the number of bowls closer to the jack than the closest bowl of the opposing team.
The game is over when a team has a total of 13 points.
